Description
The EDCS Grab Bag is a functional 48-hour survival kit that forms part of a Layered Survival System. This pack can be extended to 72 hours or more if one is proficient in basic survival skills. The strategy behind the bag focuses on three main priorities, which remain constant regardless of the situation, ensuring functionality in any scenario:
- Immediate (Metabolic) Needs: Core Temperature | Hydration | Calories
- Preventative Needs: First Aid | Navigation | Signal
- Supplemental Needs: Tools | Maintenance | Repair
The Shelter System is designed around three essentials: something to sleep on, something to sleep in, and something to sleep under. With these items and a pre-set Ridge Line, core temperature control is achieved (excluding personal clothing items).
The Fire Kit provides at least three methods of starting a fire, addressing core temperature needs, calorie intake (food preparation), signaling, and water purification (hydration).
The Water Kit offers two methods for purifying water, aside from the standard fire application, focusing on providing drinking water while remaining mobile.
Subsistence emphasizes calorie intake without the need for extensive food preparation. Ready-to-eat meals are ideal, especially in potentially non-permissive environments where stopping to make a fire or fish may not be feasible.
The Trauma & First Aid Kit covers the basics with proper medical gear, balancing effectiveness and cost.
The Navigation Kit complements your GPS or mobile phone. It’s recommended to obtain a map of the area, with a compass and map serving as backups should electronic devices fail.
The Tool Kit, in conjunction with the Survival Tin, addresses repair and maintenance needs, providing basic tools necessary for survival.
The Communication Kit suggests gear for powering your signal, navigation, and communication devices, as well as non-electronic items for emergency communication.
