Description
This course is presented in association with AdventureMed and the Wilderness Medical Society (USA). It is designed for individuals with a medical qualification or those who have obtained the Wilderness First Responder certification and wish to further their knowledge and skills, or as a refresher.
Over three days, we will introduce aspects of wilderness medicine ranging from planning a medical kit, survival strategies, hygiene, water and food planning, to the use of specialized equipment in remote environments, including a variety of extrication and transport devices. The standard course runs from our lecture facilities in Cape Town or Johannesburg, with one day spent outdoors for skills practice.
Skin lesions, twisted ankles, and bug bites are all familiar problems, but what about lightning strikes or injured SCUBA divers? Altitude and cold present challenges both to patients and rescuers: how do we mitigate and when can we wait it out versus needing to evacuate urgently? WLS:MP discusses the presentation and management of all these topics and more, with lectures, demonstrations, group discussions, practical skills, and shared experiences improvising in the field. We show you examples from our own medical kits, a variety of rescue and survival equipment, and lessons learned from real experiences.
Any medical professional who works or plays outdoors or in remote areas will benefit from this course. Medical, paramedical, or associated healthcare professionals are all invited to join us, regardless of the level of training. No prior wilderness experience is required. Custom programs are available upon request. Participants will gain valuable knowledge and skills that can help them save lives and prevent medical emergencies from escalating in remote and wilderness settings.
Wild Medix will be running this course in South Africa as a non-residential course over three days. Two days are classroom-based, and the final day is an outdoor day at a nearby venue for realistic simulations.
